Before you start

What Compress Image does and when to use it

Use compression when an image already has suitable dimensions but its file is too large for a website, form, marketplace or email. ResizeImg lets you choose a direct quality setting or a maximum size in KB or MB. The target-size option is useful when another service enforces a strict upload limit; the quality option is better when visual consistency matters more than an exact number.

Best for

Common uses

  • Meeting an upload limit measured in KB or MB
  • Reducing website and email image weight
  • Comparing JPG, PNG and WebP output

Under the hood

How the browser processes it

The browser decodes the selected image into a canvas. For JPG and WebP target-size output, ResizeImg searches for the highest practical encoder quality below the chosen limit. If even a very low quality cannot reach that limit, it progressively reduces pixel dimensions. PNG encoding is lossless, so an unusually small PNG target may require reduced dimensions instead of a quality change.

Tips for a better result

  • Keep a copy of the untouched original
  • Try WebP or JPG for photographs
  • Inspect hair, text and sharp edges before downloading

What this tool cannot promise

A target is a maximum rather than a promise of an exact byte count. Browser encoders differ slightly, and an extremely small target may require a visibly smaller image. Re-encoding also creates a new file and does not preserve every item of embedded image metadata.

Questions and answers

Compress Image FAQ

Can I compress an image to a specific size in KB or MB?

Yes. Choose Target size, move the slider or enter an exact value, then select KB or MB. ResizeImg aims for that maximum while preserving as much quality as practical.

Does image compression reduce quality?

Lossy JPG and WebP compression can remove some detail. Start near 82% and lower it gradually until the file is small enough while still looking clean.

Are images uploaded to a server?

No. ResizeImg performs the compression in your browser, so your selected image stays on your device.
